ORIOLES ADD OUTFIELDER TRAVIS SNIDER Tuesday, January 27, 2015
The Baltimore Orioles acquired outfielder Travis Snider from the Pittsburgh Pirates for pitcher Stephen Tarpley and a player to be named later.
What does it give the Baltimore Orioles?
This is a potentially solid acquisition for the Orioles, who needed someone to play right field following the departure of Markakis to Atlanta. Incredibly, the left-hand-hitting Snider is still only 26 years old (he turns 27 next week) and may still have some untapped upside. He should also enjoy playing in the American League again, as well as Oriole Park at Camden Yards in Baltimore (a homer haven). This could turn into a major addition for the O's.
What does it give the Pittsburgh Pirates?
In Tarpley, the Bucs land a very young left-hander with promise. He is still several years away from challenging for a big-league spot but is a solid addition to Pittsburgh's prospect pool. They also will receive a player to be named later in this deal, which is a pretty good haul in exchange for their fourth outfielder. Snider had lost the right field job to young Polanco during the 2014 campaign, so this deal makes sense for all parties involved.
Fantasy Impact
Snider's fantasy value should be on the rise now that he's with Baltimore, while the likes of Polanco and Marte are now more entrenched in Pittsburgh's outfield. If there are losers following this transaction, it's likely Orioles outfield prospect Urrutia and journeyman Pearce Tarpley should now be on the keeper league radar.
