ANGELS GET LEFTY BAT JOYCE FROM TAMPA Tuesday, December 16, 2014
The Los Angeles Angels acquired DH/OF Matt Joyce from the Tampa Bay Rays for pitcher Kevin Jepsen.
What does it give the Los Angeles Angels?
This is a deal that should help both teams, as both are filling needs. For the Angels, they will be able to use Joyce in left and right field and also as a left-handed platoon DH. He'll likely see most of his time in left (allowing Hamilton to DH against most right-handers) and provide another left-handed power bat. Jepsen's role in the bullpen will go to one of Salas Bedrosian or perhaps Pestano They clearly felt Jepsen was expendable.
What does it give the Tampa Bay Rays?
Jepsen should have a bigger role with the Rays in 2015 than had he stayed in Anaheim, since Tampa Bay won't have left-handed closer McGee (elbow surgery) to start the season. Therefore, look for Jepsen to be in the mix for holds or saves in the early going. By moving Joyce, the Rays can play both Kiermaier and Jennings in the outfield at the same time. Or, they may decide to move Zobrist to the outfield permanently. They have options.
Fantasy Impact
The big winner here could be Kiermaier, who may get everyday duty in Tampa Bay now that Joyce is gone. Or, someone like Franklin could take over at second base (with Zobrist moving to left field). Joyce's value remains largely intact as a strong-half platoon option. Jepsen's value improves in Tampa Bay, especially in light of McGee's injury.
