RED SOX ACQUIRE MILEY IN 4-PLAYER SWAP Friday, December 12, 2014
The Boston Red Sox acquired pitcher Wade Miley from the Arizona Diamondbacks for pitchers Rubby De La Rosa and Allen Webster, plus infielder Raymel Flores.
What does it give the Boston Red Sox?
In Miley, the Red Sox land a quality left-handed starter to join the rest of their new-look, mostly right-handed starting rotation. Like fellow newcomers Porcello and Masterson Miley isn't a dominant pitcher but he is a quality addition to Boston's starting staff. The BoSox paid a steep price to get him, but he was a necessary addition to the club (especially after losing out on free agent and former Boston lefty Lester who signed with the Cubs).
What does it give the Arizona Diamondbacks?
By acquiring both De La Rosa and Webster, the Diamondbacks were able to turn one starting pitcher into two. Both are expected to challenge for a spot in Arizona's 2015 rotation, and both have more upside than the departing Miley. Still, this move signals more of a long-range approach for new Arizona General Manager Dave Stewart. As for Flores, he is a quality middle infield prospect who is several years away from becoming a factor in Arizona (he's just 19 years old).
Fantasy Impact
Miley should receive greater run support in Beantown, and he could also dramatically improve his numbers moving away from Chase Field (provided he learns how to master Fenway Park's 'Green Monster' in left field). Both De La Rosa and Webster have greater fantasy value now that their chances of sticking in the starting rotations have improved. De La Rosa, in particular, could break out in a big way in '15. Flores is a keeper-league infield prospect with deep, long-range upside.
