HALOS, DODGERS MAKE RARE SWAP Tuesday, December 9, 2014
The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim acquired catcher Drew Butera from the Los Angeles Dodgers for a player to be named later.
What does it give the Los Angeles Angels?
The Angels have one of the best game-callers in big-league history as their manager (Mike Scioscia), so they value receiving, leadership and defense from behind the plate more than most clubs. Enter Butera, a veteran journeyman who isn't much of a hitter but can offer guidance to pitchers. Since he's like an extra coach in uniform, Butera might wind up being the Angels' backup catcher to Iannetta in 2015--especially after the club dealt Conger to Houston.
What does it give the Los Angeles Dodgers?
The Dodgers are looking for upgrades behind the plate this off-season. They were reportedly very interested in bringing back Martin to serve as the No. 1 catcher, but he signed with Toronto. Ellis is still in the mix, while good-hitting Lavernaway was recently acquired from Boston. That combination may begin '15 as L.A.'s two catching options. However, don't be surprised if the Dodgers make another move before the start of spring training.
Fantasy Impact
Butera has no fantasy value. The only thing he'll provide is better support for the Angels' pitching staff. Therefore, this move could be a bit of a boost to all Angels pitchers.
