DODGERS ADD RIGHTY STARTER BOLSINGER Saturday, November 22, 2014
The Los Angeles Dodgers acquired pitcher Mike Bolsinger from the Arizona Diamondbacks for cash.
What does it give the Los Angeles Dodgers?
Righty Bolsinger made nine starts for the Diamondbacks last season and posted mediocre results, and while he has definite strikeout ability his performance above Double-A has been middling. That suggests the 26-year old will be slated for organizational starter depth with the Dodgers. His role will probably be as a regular starting pitcher at Triple-A, and if he can harness his control there Bolsinger has a chance to push for some starts (if needed) in the majors next season.
What does it give the Arizona Diamondbacks?
New Diamondbacks GM Dave Stewart was a star pitcher in his playing days, and he seems intent on rebuilding Arizona's starting rotation. This is just the latest of several trades aimed at shuffling the starting pitching depth, and Stewart obviously didn't covet Bolsinger. The cash will help the D'backs with more moves.
Fantasy Impact
Bolsinger has shown he can at least somewhat compete at the major league level, so if injuries hit the Dodgers rotation he has some deep sleeper appeal. That said, for now Bolsinger appears well behind other younger, more promising L.A. hurlers. In Arizona not much changes fantasy-wise, since the D'backs have already added a starter this off-season in Hellickson (more than replacing Bolsinger's limited innings). The Dodgers designated lefty relief pitcher Martin to make room on the 40-man roster for Bolsinger, and Martin had little to no fantasy value before this deal.
