CARDS ADD VERSATILE IF KELLY FROM M'S Thursday, November 20, 2014
The St. Louis Cardinals acquired infielder Ty Kelly from the Seattle Mariners for pitcher Sam Gaviglio.
What does it give the St. Louis Cardinals?
In Kelly, the Cards land a 26-year old who can play all over the infield and provide a solid bat. He switch-hits, too, which adds to his appeal. Don't be surprised if he lands a spot on the St. Louis bench by the end of spring training.
What does it give the Seattle Mariners?
In Gaviglio, the Mariners get a decent pitching prospect who struggled in Double-A ball in 2014. However, he did strike out 126 batters in 136.2 innings, which suggests his future may still be bright. He's still only 24 years old.
Fantasy Impact
Keep an eye on Kelly, who may become a valuable utility man in St. Louis. He's more of a dark horse in terms of his fantasy value, but he might surprise if given enough at-bats. As for Gaviglio, he should also be on the fantasy radar--but only in deep keeper leagues.
