The Rays love reclamation projects on the mound, so Poppen is merely the latest for the franchise. The 27-year-old right-hander will begin his Rays career at Triple-A Durham but he should be up with Tampa Bay at some point in 2021.

The Pirates recently designated Poppen for assignment, so it is no surprise to see them deal him to Tampa Bay for cash. Poppen struggled as a Pirate (4.2 IP, 7.71 ERA) so perhaps a change of scenery will serve him well.

Poppen is not a fantasy option, although do not be surprise if the Rays turn him into an effective big-league pitcher. That is what they do.
