KYLE HOLDER HEADED TO CINCINNATI Saturday, January 30, 2021
The Cincinnati Reds acquired infielder Kyle Holder from the Philadelphia Phillies for cash.
What does it give the Cincinnati Reds?
The Reds have a gaping hole at the shortstop position, so Holder may be able to help plug it. He is a Rule 5 draftee, so he must remain on the active roster for all of 2021 (or he will have to be offered back to his parent team, the Yankees). Look for Cincinnati to make another move to address their shortstop issue.
What does it give the Philadelphia Phillies?
The Phillies no longer needed Holder because they were able to re-sign starting shortstop Didi Gregorius. They also acquired infielder C.J. Chatham from Boston earlier in the off-season, so Holder was deemed expendable. Philadelphia will receive a little bit of cash in this transaction (and that is all).
Fantasy Impact
If Holder becomes Cincinnati's starting shortstop, he would suddenly climb into fantasy draft relevance. However, the Reds are expected to bring in more help at the position, so temper expectations for Holder. Take a wait-and-see approach with him this spring.
