STEVEN MATZ MOVES TO TORONTO Wednesday, January 27, 2021
The Toronto Blue Jays acquired pitcher Steven Matz from the New York Mets for pitchers Sean Reid-Foley, Yennsy Diaz and Josh Winckowski.
What does it give the Toronto Blue Jays?
The Blue Jays definitely needed to upgrade their starting pitching this off-season, so adding the left-handed Matz makes sense. The 29-year-old Matz struggled badly in 2020 but he is talented enough to turn things around with Toronto. The Jays gave up quantity in terms of the pitching prospects surrendered, which proves how desperate they currently are to add pitching.
What does it give the New York Mets?
The Mets have plenty of other starting options right now, after acquiring Carlos Carrasco, Marcus Stroman and Joey Lucchesi to join Jacob deGrom and Noah Syndergaard. Reid-Foley could also factor into the rotation mix in 2021, or he could also be a bullpen option. Diaz has a talented arm and Winckowski also has some upside. This is a good deal for the Mets.
Fantasy Impact
Matz may rebound in Toronto, and his rotation status is far better as a member of the Blue Jays. Therefore, he should see a slight uptick in fantasy value after this deal. Reid-Foley should be monitored in spring training. He might be a decent fantasy sleeper at some point in '21. Diaz and Winckowski should be on the fantasy keeper radar (and that is all for the time being).
