RED SOX ADD ADAM OTTAVINO Monday, January 25, 2021
The Boston Red Sox acquired pitcher Adam Ottavino, pitcher Frank German and cash considerations from the New York Yankees for future considerations.
What does it give the Boston Red Sox?
The Red Sox were able to land a decent reliever and a prospect in this trade in exchange for very little, which is always a good move in professional sports. Ottavino may be able to carve out an important role out of Boston's bullpen in 2021, while German has talent and a big arm. The Yankees also picked up $850,000 of Ottavino's $8 million salary.
What does it give the New York Yankees?
The Yankees were motivated to dump salary here, which is why they parted ways with German to entice Boston to accept most of Ottavino's salary. Do not expect New York to receive much (if anything) in return here. This trade was a classic salary dump. The Bronx Bombers want to remain below the ($210 million) luxury tax threshold.
Fantasy Impact
Ottavino could be a decent source of saves in 2021, although Boston is once again expected to struggle to collect wins this season. Still, he might be a decent last-round option in some fantasy league formats. German is a prospect who should now be on the fantasy radar, although he is really only a draft option in very deep keeper formats at this time.
