Trade Details
MIAMI JETTISONS JONATHAN VILLAR TO TORONTO Monday, August 31, 2020
The Toronto Blue Jays acquired infielder Jonathan Villar from the Miami Marlins for a player to be named later.
What does it give the Toronto Blue Jays?
The Blue Jays needed a short-term fix at shortstop due to the injury to Bo Bichette. Enter Villar, who can play all over the field and serve as a decent option at the top of the batting lineup. Villar will probably serve a utility role for the rest of 2020 once Bichette returns.
What does it give the Miami Marlins?
Rumors persist that the player to be named later in this deal will be Griffin Conine--son of former Marlins slugger Jeff Conine. The younger Conine is an outfielder who has not plated above low Single-A ball, so he will have plenty of time to develop his baseball skills.
Fantasy Impact
Villar should lose fantasy stock once Bichette returns from injury, so he is the type of player who could be sold now before it i too late. Conine is off the fantasy radar for the time being. He is too far away as a prospect.
