In Smith, the A's land a right-hander who pitched very well for the Giants in a relief role last season (8.2 IP, 2.08 ERA) after struggling badly in Milwaukee. He has a chance to break camp with Oakland with a strong spring.

The Giants recently designated Smith for assignment, so they were able to get back some cash from their Bay Area rivals in Oakland. San Francisco felt comfortable with their current bullpen situation.
