Trade Details
MAZARA MOVES TO THE WHITE SOX Wednesday, December 11, 2019
The Chicago White Sox acquired outfielder Nomar Mazara from the Texas Rangers for outfielder Steele Walker.
What does it give the Chicago White Sox?
This looks like a solid acquisition for the White Sox, who now have a left-handed batter in Mazara to team with righty sluggers Jose Abreu and Eloy Jimenez (plus switch-hitting catcher Yasmani Grandal). Mazara will probably patrol right field in Chicago (much like he did with the Rangers). Despite a down season in 2019 (.268 BA, 19 HR, 66 RBI), Mazara is still only 24 and still has plenty of untapped upside.
What does it give the Texas Rangers?
Walker is also a left-handed batter and he is a year younger than Mazara. Furthermore, he is a local product from Prosper, Texas. That said, he has not played above Single-A ball and will likely start out at Double-A Frisco in 2020. While the Rangers obviously like Walker as an outfield prospect, perhaps they did not receive enough of a return here for their starting right-fielder (who is still young and an unfinished product).
Fantasy Impact
Mazara's stock could soar after this trade, especially if the White Sox offense takes a major step forward in 2020 (as expected). Mazara should be drafted in all league formats and might even be a decent keeper candidate in the deepest leagues. As for Walker, he is now on the keeper radar so keep an eye on his progress within the Rangers organization next season.
