Trade Details
MILWAUKEE, SAN DIEGO SWAP FIVE ASSETS Wednesday, November 27, 2019
The Milwaukee Brewers acquired infielder Luis Urias, pitcher Eric Lauer and a player to be named later from the San Diego Padres for outfielder Trent Grisham and pitcher Zach Davies.
What does it give the Milwaukee Brewers?
This is an interesting (and potentially important) trade involving two young bats in particular: Urias and Grisham. Urias is an infielder, which was an area of need for the Brew Crew heading into 2020. He is more of an offensive middle infielder, so look for him to replace Orlando Arcia at shortstop. Urias would be a major upgrade over Arcia with the bat, but a downgrade defensively. In Lauer, the Brewers also acquire a potential left-hander for their starting rotation. Overall, this deal should help both teams.
What does it give the San Diego Padres?
Grisham is a talented, left-handed batter who can toil at all three outfield positions. He figures to play at the very least against all right-handed pitching next season, so right-handed batters Wil Myers, Manuel Margot and Hunter Renfroe could be in danger of losing a starting job. In Davies, the Padres also get a quality starting pitcher who can eat up innings for the staff. He figures to be a rotation regular in 2020. The key to this trade will be the emergence of both Urias and Grisham as everyday, impact players for their new teams.
Fantasy Impact
Both Urias and Grisham get a significant boost in their respective fantasy stock after this trade, while Davies should also be helped by pitching at PETCO Park in San Diego half the time. Lauer's stock remains virtually unchanged, while the big losers after this trade appear to be Arcia, Margot, Myers and/or Renfroe. Both Urias and Grisham should be drafted in virtually all league formats in '20, and Urias could even be a keeper consideration in deeper leagues.
