CLEVELAND COMPLETES TRADE FOR WOOD Sunday, July 28, 2019
The Cleveland Indians acquired pitcher Hunter Wood and infielder Christian Arroyo from the Tampa Bay Rays for outfielder Ruben Cardenas and international bonus pool money in 2019-20.
What does it give the Cleveland Guardians?
In Wood, the Indians get a very good young reliever with upside. He turns 26 years old next month and fashions a nifty 2.48 earned-run average in 19 big-league appearances this season. He should help Cleveland immediately, while Arroyo is more of a project as he is currently on the 60-day injured list.
What does it give the Tampa Bay Rays?
In Cardenas, the Rays get a pretty good outfield prospect who is several years away from joining the team (he has yet to play above low Single-A ball), plus a little extra bonus pool money for future international signings. Tampa Bay is always looking towards the future, which is why they have built such a terrific farm system.
Fantasy Impact
Do not be surprised if Wood quickly becomes a very important piece in the Indians' bullpen puzzle. He should be picked up if available in virtually all leagues down the stretch. Arroyo and Cardenas hold future value (especially the latter) but do not need to be picked up in keeper leagues at this time.
