The Cubs recently lost the services of starting catcher Willson Contreras to a foot injury, so Maldonado will fill in for a few games while Contreras recuperates.

The Royals dealt away their starting catcher for this season in order to pick up Montgomery, a versatile left-hander who will join Kansas City's rotation for the time being.

Montgomery has more value as a starter than as a reliever, but he is still not a great fantasy option on the rebuilding Royals. As for Maldonado, his time as a starter is coming to an end. He did not own great fantasy value even as an everyday player.
