BOSTON BRINGS IN PITCHER CASHNER Saturday, July 13, 2019
The Boston Red Sox acquired pitcher Andrew Cashner and cash from the Baltimore Orioles for outfielder Elio Prado and infielder Noelberth Romero.
What does it give the Boston Red Sox?
In Cashner, the Red Sox receive a veteran right-hander (he turns 33 in September) who adds depth to the pitching staff. For now, he will continue to be used as a starter but may be more effective (and certainly more dominant) as a reliever. He gives Boston options. The Orioles threw in some cash to help pay the rest of Cashner's salary.
What does it give the Baltimore Orioles?
The Orioles did well here to cash in (pardon the pun) on Cashner, adding a pair of teen prospects. Prado is a 17-year-old outfielder from Venezuela who does not turn 18 until November, while Romero is a shortstop who turns 18 one month later than Prado. Both are very long-range prospects but this is a nice return for Baltimore.
Fantasy Impact
Cashner's value is limited as a starting pitcher, as he has a fairly weak strikeout/walk ratio. He is not recommendable even after the move to Boston. Both Prado and Romero are long-term prospects who will need significantly more time in order to develop into fantasy factors down the road.
