AUSTIN ADDED TO THE GIANTS Monday, April 8, 2019
The San Francisco Giants acquired first baseman Tyler Austin from the Minnesota Twins for outfielder Malique Ziegler.
What does it give the San Francisco Giants?
In Austin, the Giants a decent power hitter and run producer who mashes left-handed pitching. He will likely start at first base against most left-handers for San Francisco (with Brandon Belt moving from first base to left field with a lefty on the mound). Veteran Gerardo Parra may continue to play left field versus right-handers, though Austin could cut into his playing time as well if he gets hot with the bat (Austin tends to run hot and cold on offense).
What does it give the Minnesota Twins?
The Twins decided to deal Austin because they are set at first base and designated hitter with C.J. Cron and Nelson Cruz (plus Miguel Sano, who can play either first or third base, currently on the injured list). In Ziegler, Minnesota gets a speedy outfielder with modest upside. He will provide mostly organizational depth but will likely play at high Single-A Fort Myers for the time being. Ziegler is not considered a top prospect.
Fantasy Impact
Austin may be worth a speculative pickup in deep leagues, but the better move right now would be to take a wait-and-see approach here. His playing time in San Francisco will ultimately determine his fantasy value. Ziegler can be safely ignored in keeper leagues, for now.
