WHITE SOX ADD ALONSO Saturday, December 15, 2018
The Chicago White Sox acquired first baseman Yonder Alonso from the Cleveland Indians for outfielder Alex Call.
What does it give the Chicago White Sox?
For the White Sox, Alonso should provide a defensive upgrade at first base from slugger Jose Abreu (who could become the team's permanent DH in 2019 or be traded for help at other positions at some point this off-season). The 31-year-old Alonso is coming off a decent '18 campaign with Cleveland and is a true professional, through and through.
What does it give the Cleveland Guardians?
The Indians did not receive a lot in exchange for their everyday first baseman from last season. Call is marginal outfield prospect who is not likely to make an impact in MLB. However, Cleveland does remove $8 million from their '19 payroll with this transaction. Newly-reacquired switch-hitter Carlos Santana is expected to take over at first base.
Fantasy Impact
Alonso should continue to be a middle-of-the-road fantasy first baseman after this deal. He is not a keeper by any stretch of the imagination, but several fantasy leaguers could do worse than Alonso as a late-round pick in most drafts. As for Call, his value is non-existent at present time (and perhaps for always).
