In Lopez, the Braves add organizational depth at the catcher position (which is currently a position of weakness). He might win a backup job in 2019, but Lopez is not a long-term starting option behind the plate for Atlanta.

The Padres have plenty of catching depth (unlike Atlanta), and they are likely to give Francisco Mejia the starting nod next season. Therefore, they had little use for Lopez and decided to take a little bit of cash in return.

Lopez has no fantasy value, as he will play a depth role with Atlanta in all likelihood.
