Trade Details
JONATHAN SCHOOP SENT TO MILWAUKEE Tuesday, July 31, 2018
The Milwaukee Brewers acquired infielder Jonathan Schoop from the Baltimore Orioles for pitcher Luis Ortiz and infielders Jonathan Villar and Jean Carmona.
What does it give the Milwaukee Brewers?
In Schoop, the Brewers upgrade the keystone position in a big way--especially with the glove. He will also provide power, though he may have to replace a better hitter (Travis Shaw, who recently moved from 3B to 2B to accomodate the arrival of Mike Moustakas).
What does it give the Baltimore Orioles?
In Villar, the Orioles may replace the departed Schoop with a faster, far inferior overall second baseman. For now, he remains on the disabled list. The keys to this trade from a Baltimore perspective, however, are Ortiz and Carmona (two young prospects with a lot of upside).
Fantasy Impact
Ortiz has a chance to become a quality starter (or closer) for Baltimore, so his fantasy value is on the rise after this deal. Carmona is light years away from MLB, but fantasy leaguers should keep an eye on his development. Schoop should improve his stock in Milwaukee, though the Brewers now have a lot of extra players (so Schoop's playing time may suffer a bit in Milwaukee). As for Villar, his stock is back up because he seems the likely successor to Schoop in Baltimore (and he was definitely headed to the bench had he remained a Brewer).
