PHILLIES CORRAL CABRERA FROM DIVISION-RIVAL METS Friday, July 27, 2018
The Philadelphia Phillies acquired infielder Asdrubal Cabrera from the New York Mets for pitcher Franklyn Kilome.
What does it give the Philadelphia Phillies?
It is rare to see the Phillies and Mets dealing together, but these are strange times in the National League East division. Cabrera adds great depth to Philadelphia's infield situation and will probably spend most of his playing time at shortstop and third base (after playing mostly second base with the Mets in 2018).
What does it give the New York Mets?
Cabrera was likely to walk as a free agent at season's end, so the Mets took the best offer for him (a few days before the non-waiver trade deadline). In Kilome, the Mets get a quality prospect who is struggling some this season. He will have an opportunity to turn things around with New York (eventually). He is a good pickup.
Fantasy Impact
For Cabrera, the move to Philadelphia should help his fantasy stock: he will now be based in a hitter-friendly park instead of a pitcher-friendly one, and joins a better offensive team (and lineup). His replacement at the keystone position in New York is likely Jeff McNeil, who may have some sneaky fantasy value down the stretch. As for Kilome, he has keeper value but is a few years away from contributing. With Cabrera now in Philly, Maikel Franco, Scott Kingery and J.P. Crawford (currently on the DL) lose a bit of fantasy value, since at least one of them will be sitting most games.
