ROYALS GET OUTFIELDER GOODWIN FROM THE NATS Sunday, July 22, 2018
The Kansas City Royals acquired outfielder Brian Goodwin from the Washington Nationals for pitcher Jacob Condra-Bogan.
What does it give the Kansas City Royals?
The rebuilding Royals seem to be in 'talent acquisition' mode, and Goodwin is a super-toolsy outfielder who was a former first-round draft pick. Expect him to audition for a regular outfield role in Major League Baseball right away, perhaps playing both center and right field for Kansas City. He has the physical talent to be a regular starter, but at age 27 Goodwin is probably at a point when he must start showing he can put it all together.
What does it give the Washington Nationals?
The Nationals system is teeming with outfield prospects, so Goodwin became expendable. He was Washington's first rounder back in 2011, but his struggles to hit for a good average have plagued him at every level above high Single-A ball. Condra-Bogan is a right-handed bullpen prospect who already shows good command of the strike zone, so he might eventually figure into the Nationals' long-term bullpen plans.
Fantasy Impact
Goodwin is a bit of a lottery ticket for the Royals. In the minors he has shown he can both hit home runs and steal bases, but he needs to develop a better batting eye. If he does, he might be a super sleeper next season. Condra-Bogan is not likely to see action in MLB this season (or possibly next season, as he is in the low minors), so he can be ignored in fantasy leagues for now.
