PADRES PICK UP PITCHER HUGHES FROM TWINS Sunday, May 27, 2018
The San Diego Padres acquired pitcher Phil Hughes, a competitive balance round B draft pick in 2018 (No. 74 overall) and cash from the Minnesota Twins for catcher Janigson Villalobos.
What does it give the San Diego Padres?
Hughes was an All-Star in 2010, and the Padres are obviously hoping he can regain that form. That said, this deal is probably more about adding the relatively high selection in this year's MLB Draft. At No. 74 overall San Diego can select a possible future major league regular. So, at the very least this gives the organization another quality asset heading into this year's draft process (which is key for a team on the rise that's focusing on youth).
What does it give the Minnesota Twins?
For the Twins, clearly this move is mostly about dropping salary (even though they are still paying a chunk of Hughes' remaining money). Villalobos is currently toiling at Rookie-level ball, and is not yet a highly-rated prospect. That said, there was a need for more catching prospects in the Twins organization. So, it is not a bad thing to be adding a freshly-turned 21-year-old receiver to Minnesota's stables.
Fantasy Impact
There is little to no fantasy fallout from this deal. Hughes has struggled mightily the past few years, and Villalobos isn't a top-tier prospect yet (and is nowhere near the major leagues at this point).
