REDS REEL IN THE DARK KNIGHT Tuesday, May 8, 2018
The Cincinnati Reds acquired pitcher Matt Harvey from the New York Mets for catcher Devin Mesoraco and cash.
What does it give the Cincinnati Reds?
The Reds are in desperate need of help in terms of starting pitching, which explains why they sent backup catcher Mesoraco and cash to the Mets for the struggling Harvey (0-2, 7.00 ERA, 33 hits, 9 BB, 20 K in 27 IP this season). Once a dominant starter, Harvey will try to rediscover past form away from the spotlight of New York. He could surprise in his new setting. The Reds were comfortable dealing Mesoraco because of the emergence of Tucker Barnhart as an everyday catcher.
What does it give the New York Mets?
For the Mets, this deal kills two birds with one stone. First, since the club had recently designated Harvey for assignment they did well to complete a deal for his services and got Cincinnati to add cash to the transaction to help with the difference between the salaries of Mesoraco ($13.1 M) and Harvey ($5.6 M). Secondly, Mesoraco adds much-needed catching depth following injuries to both Travis d'Arnaud and Kevin Plawecki. This trade helps all parties involved.
Fantasy Impact
This deal should help Harvey end his horrific pitching slump, though Great American Ball Park is a home-run haven that Harvey will have to negotiate. This deal will also help Mesoraco, especially in terms of short-term playing time while both d'Arnaud and Plawecki are sidelined. This trade also helps Barnhart's everyday status.
