ATLANTA ADDS C PEREZ FROM THE HALOS Saturday, March 31, 2018
The Atlanta Braves acquired catcher Carlos Perez from the Los Angeles Angels for infielder Ryan Schimpf.
What does it give the Atlanta Braves?
With both their regular catchers (Tyler Flowers and Kurt Suzuki) injured early on in 2018, the Braves had a fairly pressing need for a backup catcher behind Chris Stewart. Enter Perez, who brings a solid amount of MLB experience. Once Flowers and Suzuki return, look for Perez to serve as organizational depth (likely at Triple-A ball).
What does it give the Los Angeles Angels?
Schimpf is a proven run producer at the big-league level, smacking 34 total homers over the past two seasons in just 441 at bats. That and his positional versatility make him a valuable depth guy for an Angels team that looks like it is trying to contend this season. Still, expect Schimpf to toil in Triple-A ball until he is needed with the big club.
Fantasy Impact
Perez is not much of an offensive option, so he has little to no fantasy value. Schimpf, however, is worth keeping on the fantasy radar in case he finds himself yet again starting in MLB. Schimpf has proven he can provide homers in bunches when he gets on a hot streak, so keep him on your deep, sleeper watch list.
