RAYS REEL IN REFSNYDER FROM CLEVELAND Tuesday, March 27, 2018
The Tampa Bay Rays acquired infielder Rob Refsnyder from the Cleveland Indians for cash.
What does it give the Tampa Bay Rays?
The Rays have overhauled their offense this off-season and do not have a lot of talent or depth on the big league club, so Refsnyder will be a part of Tampa Bay's roster right away (because he is out of minor-league options). His versatility off the bench should help, and he might even see a lot of at-bats against right-handed pitching this season.
What does it give the Cleveland Guardians?
Refsnyder lost out in his bid for the final bench spot on Cleveland's roster this spring so, since the club did not have the option of sending him to the minor leagues, the Indians did a solid job of getting something in return for him (rather than simply releasing him). The Tribe are still deep in versatile infielder/outfielder types such as Refsnyder.
Fantasy Impact
On most teams Refsnyder would not be much of a fantasy option, but with the talent-starved Rays he is worth at least keeping an eye on. He still has a bit of offensive upside and perhaps even a little sleeper potential, but do not add him unless or until he finds regular at-bats.
