BUCS ADD LEFT-HANDER JOSH SMOKER Wednesday, January 31, 2018
The Pittsburgh Pirates acquired pitcher Josh Smoker from the New York Mets for pitcher Daniel Zamora.
What does it give the Pittsburgh Pirates?
The Pirates will probably use fireballing left-hander Felipe Rivero as their closer in 2018, but the club needed a second lefty for the bullpen. Enter Smoker, 29, who struck out 68 batters in just 56.1 innings with the Mets last season.
What does it give the New York Mets?
New York recently designated Smoker for assignment after re-signing veteran infielder Jose Reyes to a one-year contract, so they did relatively well to add another left-handed arm (Zamora) and a little cash in this transaction.
Fantasy Impact
Neither Smoker nor Zamora have immediate fantasy value but both could be part of their new teams' bullpens in 2018. Smoker is the more likely lefty to break camp after spring training, and could eventually be a source for holds (and the odd save).
