Trade Details
MARINERS HAUL IN HEALY FROM OAKLAND Wednesday, November 15, 2017
The Seattle Mariners acquired designated hitter Ryon Healy from the Oakland Athletics for pitcher Emilio Pagan and infielder Alexander Campos.
What does it give the Seattle Mariners?
The Mariners needed both a regular first baseman (Yonder Alonso is currently a free agent) and another right-handed power bat for the middle of their lineup, so it makes sense that they added Healy here. A former teammate of Alonso's in Oakland, Healy is expected to play every day at first base for Seattle (though he can also play third base and serve as a DH, if required).
What does it give the Oakland Athletics?
The Athletics have plenty of versatile bats in the same mold as Healy, so it is not surprising that they shipped him to Seattle for two young talents. Pagan is a talented reliever who should become a regular pitching out of Oakland's bullpen in 2018. As for Campos, he is a long ways away from MLB but displays a great glove for shortstop and some potential with the stick.
Fantasy Impact
Healy's fantasy value remains steady after the trade, mainly because he is expected to see regular at-bats in Seattle (which is what he received during his breakout campaign with the A's in 2017). Pagan might finish next season as Oakland's closer, and will almost certainly crack the team's bullpen out of spring training, so his fantasy value is currently higher than it was before the trade. As for Campos, he is still far off the fantasy radar (though a name to remember for future years).
