RED SOX ACQUIRE ADDISON REED FOR RELIEF Monday, July 31, 2017
The Boston Red Sox acquired pitcher Addison Reed from the New York Mets for pitchers Jamie Callahan, Gerson Bautista and Steve Nogosek.
What does it give the Boston Red Sox?
The BoSox needed a setup man for terrific closer Craig Kimbrel, since both Tyler Thornburg and Carson Smith have been on the 60-day disabled list in 2017. Reed will fill the role to perfection, since he had been closing for the Mets this season (but is even more comfortable pitching the eighth inning). Boston gave up three relief prospects to get him, but Reed should be worth it if the Sox make a run into the postseason.
What does it give the New York Mets?
The Mets already planned for Reed's departure by trading for former Miami Marlins closer A.J. Ramos, and they also still have Jeurys Familia (suspended) in the fold. Therefore, Reed was deemed expendable. In return, New York received three decent pitching prospects who all appear destined for MLB bullpen duty down the road. Callahan seems to be the closest to the big leagues, but all three could make it.
Fantasy Impact
The lack of save opportunities for Reed in Beantown should hurt his fantasy value, though he is still a great asset in leagues that count holds. Ramos now becomes the short-term closer (and perhaps longer) in New York, so his value is definitely spiked here. Callahan, Bautista and Nogosek may become future fantasy assets out of the Mets' bullpen, but not right away.
