BREW CREW ADD RELIEVER SWARZAK Tuesday, July 25, 2017
The Milwaukee Brewers acquired pitcher Anthony Swarzak from the Chicago White Sox for outfielder Ryan Cordell.
What does it give the Milwaukee Brewers?
With this deal, the Brewers are looking to add a setup man for closer Corey Knebel. Swarzak has enjoyed success as a reliever this season, after years of struggling to find his big-league niche. Milwaukee is still leading the National League Central division race, but Chicago, Pittsburgh and St. Louis are all in hot pursuit. Therefore, adding help makes a lot of sense right now. Swarzak should help bolster the bullpen.
What does it give the Chicago White Sox?
The White Sox have been in clear selling mode throughout 2017, so it is no surprise that they shipped out Swarzak--who recently was closing for Chicago after the David Robertson departure to the Yankees. In return, the White Sox land Cordell (a big, power hitter who can play both outfield corners and also third base, if required). The 25-year-old is a long shot to become an everyday player in MLB, but the tools are there.
Fantasy Impact
Swarzak should see more hold chances in Milwaukee down the stretch, but fewer save opportunities. Therefore, he loses most of his fantasy value in leagues that do not use the holds category. As for Cordell, he should be on the fantasy radar now (since Chicago will audition several players down the stretch and next spring training).
