JAYS, YANKS SWAP IF'S REFSNYDER, MCBROOM Sunday, July 23, 2017
The Toronto Blue Jays acquired infielder / outfielder Rob Refsnyder from the New York Yankees for first baseman Ryan McBroom.
What does it give the Toronto Blue Jays?
The Jays have already sent Refsnyder to the minor leagues, so the young utilityman appears set to provide organizational depth for his new club. Toronto has done a solid job of developing utilitymen in recent years (including Ryan Goins and Darwin Barney), so perhaps they can do the same with Refsnyder. He has shown solid all-round tools in the minors.
What does it give the New York Yankees?
Dealing Refsnyder achieves two objectives for the Yankees: first, they move on from a player who was not panning out at the major-league level; and secondly, they open up a spot on the 40-man roster (giving the team more flexibility for their playoff push). McBroom showed the ability to hit for both power and average in the lower minors before reaching Double-A (so his new organization's first order of business will probably be to help him get more selective at the dish). New York had a need for depth at first base.
Fantasy Impact
Even if Refsnyder manages to reverse his decline of the past couple seasons, he does not project to be much of a fantasy factor at the major league level. McBroom also has limited fantasy potential and, like Refsnyder, has several more-promising prospects ahead of him in the pipeline with his new team.
