PADRES PICK UP OUTFIELDER MATT SZCZUR Monday, May 8, 2017
The San Diego Padres acquired outfielder Matt Szczur from the Chicago Cubs for pitcher Justin Hancock.
What does it give the San Diego Padres?
Solid Szczur adds needed depth in San Diego's outfield, since the Padres are currently without their top two options for left field (Alex Dickerson and Travis Jankowski) due to injury. Szczur may end up in a platoon with one of the above later on in 2017. He is a solid acquisition for the Pads.
What does it give the Chicago Cubs?
Chicago did Szczur a favor by moving him to San Diego, where he is expected to see far more playing time than he did with the Cubs. Szczur was done in by the numbers game in Chicago: Jason Heyward, Albert Almora Jr., Kyle Schwarber, Ben Zobrist, Jon Jay, etc. There was no room for him.
Fantasy Impact
Even if Szczur receives a lot more opportunities with the Padres, he is still expected to settle into a platoon role. Therefore, his fantasy value could still be negligible. As for Hancock, he is not much of a bullpen prospect. Furthermore, he is already 26 years old. There is nothing to see here.
