GIANTS, RANGERS SWAP MINOR LEAGUERS Sunday, April 16, 2017
The Texas Rangers acquired pitcher Clayton Blackburn from the San Francisco Giants for infielder Frandy De La Rosa.
What does it give the Texas Rangers?
This might prove to be a bit of a steal for the Rangers. In 2015, talented righty Blackburn was one of the top young pitchers in Triple-A, posting a 2.85 ERA with a 10-4 record. He fell off that pace considerably last season though, and a rough start early this season may have been the catalyst for his exit. Regardless, he's a proven starting pitcher (in the minors anyway) and it's clear the Rangers need organizational pitching depth after a very rough opening few weeks for their bullpen.
What does it give the San Francisco Giants?
De La Rosa has some intriguing tools (he can play both shortstop and second base, and possesses good size and speed) but he remains pretty raw overall as a prospect. The Giants recently waived Blackburn, so they are probably pleased to at least get something here in return for him. The cash helps as well.
Fantasy Impact
Blackburn is more fantasy-notable than De La Rosa at this point, but neither should be on any 'add' lists for most fantasy formats. For the near future Blackburn looks likely to continue pitching mostly at Triple-A and provide starter depth for the Rangers, while De La Rosa is probably years away from making his big-league debut (assuming he can improve his batting eye).
