PHILLIES GET VETERAN STARTER BUCHHOLZ Tuesday, December 20, 2016
The Philadelphia Phillies acquired pitcher Clay Buchholz from the Boston Red Sox for infielder Joshua Tobias.
What does it give the Philadelphia Phillies?
In adding Buchholz, the Phillies get a more proven starter for their relatively young starting rotation. Beyond 29-year-old Jeremy Hellickson, the rest of the 2017 projected rotation was going to be quite youthful. Therefore, adding 32-year-old Buchholz makes sense (especially if he can regain past form).
What does it give the Boston Red Sox?
The Red Sox were motivated to dump Buchholz's salary, regardless of what they would receive in return. That is because the recent arrival of Chris Sale completed their rotation, so the team felt comfortable moving on from Buchholz. Tobias is a middling infield prospect who might not ever reach the bigs.
Fantasy Impact
A move to the National League could bode well for Buchholz and his fledgling fantasy value, though he will need to prove himself in spring training first (so as to secure a spot in Philadelphia's rotation). Tobias is not much of a fantasy prospect (or any type of prospect, for that matter).
