CUBS GET P DAVIS FROM KC FOR OF SOLER Wednesday, December 7, 2016
The Chicago Cubs acquired pitcher Wade Davis from the Kansas City Royals for outfielder Jorge Soler.
What does it give the Chicago Cubs?
In a swap involving the last two World Series champions, the current champs were able to land a quality closer (when healthy) in Davis. Unfortunately, the veteran right-hander endured forearm issues during 2016 that forced him to miss 33 games. The Cubs are hoping those problems will not fester into 2017. It is a bit of a risk on their part but Soler was somewhat redundant on Chicago's roster, so they can afford to do this deal at this time.
What does it give the Kansas City Royals?
For the 2015 World Series heros, adding Soler gives them another quality power bat for their lineup. The 24-year-old Cuban outfielder hit 12 home runs in just 227 at-bats in 2016, but was never able to carve out an everyday role with the Cubs. In Kansas City, Soler will likely see 500-600 at-bats while serving as the team's DH some of the time. He will also back up Alex Gordon in left field and Lorenzo Cain (who can play both RF and CF).
Fantasy Impact
Davis, while an injury risk, could see his fantasy value skyrocket if the Cubs continue to dominate the National League. He will be the team's closer when healthy. Soler is another player whose fantasy stock is definitely on the rise, as he will most likely see everyday duty with the Royals--finally.
