GRIZZ GET 3-POINT ACE DANIELS FROM HORNETS Tuesday, July 12, 2016
The Memphis Grizzlies acquired shooting guard Troy Daniels from the Charlotte Hornets for cash considerations.
What does it give the Memphis Grizzlies?
If Daniels plays regularly for the Grizz he'll fill a key need: 3-point shooting. Memphis was near the bottom of the NBA last season (29th overall) in 3-point percentage (.331) and Daniels is one of the league's premier shooters from the arc. That doesn't mean he'll play major minutes, but Daniels should at least see more game action than he did with Charlotte.
What does it give the Charlotte Hornets?
The Hornets filled their perimeter shooting needs earlier this off-season by trading for Marco Belinelli, and that move made Daniels expendable. By signing Daniels first (and then trading him to Memphis), the Hornets help the Grizzlies pay Daniels a higher salary (since 'home' teams can pay players more in free agency than new suitors can). Charlotte gets some cash in the deal for helping things along.
Fantasy Impact
Daniels gets a clear and obvious fantasy upgrade with this deal--not only because the Grizzlies clearly value him more than the Hornets did, but also because he fills a key need for his new team. Expect him to be a solid-minute rotation guy in the coming season, and for him to fill up the 3-point stat categories.
