HORNETS HAUL IN 3-POINT SHOOTER BELINELLI FOR DRAFTEE RICHARDSON Thursday, July 7, 2016
The Charlotte Hornets acquired guard / small forward Marco Belinelli from the Sacramento Kings for the rights to shooting guard Malachi Richardson.
What does it give the Charlotte Hornets?
Losing combo guard Jeremy Lin this off-season was tough for the Hornets, but they do a solid job here of replacing him with Belinelli. While Belinelli isn't as much of a passer as Lin, he is one of the NBA's best 3-point shooters. Charlotte attempted the fourth-most 3-balls in the NBA last season (29.4 per game) so Bellinelli is a nice pickup for a team looking to replace Lin's perimeter production. He struggled from downtown last season, but there's no reason to think he won't bounce back.
What does it give the Sacramento Kings?
It's hard to put a finger on what the Kings are trying to achieve with their current roster--except to suggest they're trying to get younger and less expensive. Swapping Belinelli's salary for Richardson's helps with the latter objective. Richardson was one of the highest-rising prospects heading up to the NBA draft (thanks to some great workouts) and the Kings are clearly one of the teams who coveted him. Richardson additionally may have starter ability in the future, so it's a solid risk here by Sacto.
Fantasy Impact
In the coming NBA season, Belinelli likely gets a small fantasy boost from this deal. That's because he'll probably be a rotation regular for the Hornets, with likely a slightly larger role than he had with the Kings. Look for him to provide good 3-point shooting numbers, and not much else. On the Sacramento side of things, Richardson probably won't play a big role in the coming campaign (so isn't fantasy-viable yet), and Belinelli's replacement--Arron Afflalo--will probably steal some minutes from Richardson and Ben McLemore at shooting guard.
