PACERS PICK UP CHRISTMAS FROM CAVS Thursday, July 23, 2015
The Indiana Pacers acquired center-power forward Rakeem Christmas from the Cleveland Cavaliers for a 2nd-round draft pick in 2019.
What does it give the Indiana Pacers?
Christmas is an intriguing center prospect who may one day start for Indiana. He's similar in a lot of ways talent-wise to the recently-traded Roy Hibbert. Like Hibbert, Christmas has jaw-dropping length and defensive tools, and like Hibbert he's a bit of a late bloomer coming into the NBA. Fittingly, Christmas was acquired with the 2nd-round pick the Pacers got from the Lakers in the Hibbert swap.
What does it give the Cleveland Cavaliers?
Cleveland is a team trying to win right now, and one with an already-set big-man rotation (including Kevin Love, Timofey Mozgov, Tristan Thompson, and Anderson Varejao). So rather than spend salary money on a rookie who likely wouldn't play much for them, the Cavs move him to Indiana here and save some cash they can use to add a more experienced roster player.
Fantasy Impact
The only fantasy impact of this deal is for long-term keeper leagues, in which Christmas gets a small boost in deep sleeper appeal with his move to Indy.
