CELTICS PICK UP PERRY JONES FROM THUNDER Tuesday, July 14, 2015
The Boston Celtics acquired swingman Perry Jones, a 2nd-round draft pick in 2019, and cash from the Oklahoma City Thunder for a trade exception and a protected 2nd-round draft pick in 2018.
What does it give the Boston Celtics?
This move represents a fresh start for Jones, who has some stellar potential but didn't quite make it all happen in his chances last season with the Thunder. Jones is a fairly unique player, in that he has guard skills and almost center size. At 23 he's still very young for an NBA player, and he joins a Celtics squad that seems intent on stockpiling as much young talent as possible. A nice low-risk gamble here, especially since Jones has a very affordable deal that expires after this season.
What does it give the Oklahoma City Thunder?
Last season the Thunder struggled significantly to get consistent production from the shooting guard spot. That led to the earlier trading of Jeremy Lamb, and now comes the moving of Jones to Boston. Clearly OKC thinks Dion Waiters can handle the job and if not, this team has several other intriguing options (including Kyle Singler, Andre Roberson, Anthony Morrow). Meanwhile Josh Huestis may now possibly land a roster spot with the Thunder.
Fantasy Impact
While the fresh start with Boston will probably afford Jones more opportunity than he had in OKC, he still faces a seemingly uphill battle for minutes (despite landing on a less-established roster). Evan Turner and Jae Crowder would appear to be ahead of him at small forward, and if he plays more shooting guard Jones will be stuck behind Avery Bradley. If an injury occurs then Jones is worth a pickup, though. On the Thunder side of the deal, little to nothing changes fantasy-wise since Jones wasn't a regular part of the Oklahoma City rotation.
