SIXERS HELP CLIPS, CUT CUNNINGHAM'S DEAL Wednesday, January 7, 2015
The Philadelphia 76ers acquired guard Jared Cunningham, the draft rights to guard Cenk Akyol and cash considerations from the Los Angeles Clippers for the draft rights to forward Sergei Lishchuk.
What does it give the Philadelphia 76ers?
The rebuilding Sixers have a huge amount of cap space (thanks to having one of the NBA's youngest rosters) so they're simply using that space to help the contending Clippers save a little money. Cunningham has already been waived by Philly, so all the 76ers really get here are the draft rights to Akyol (who is still fairly young at 27 and is currently playing in Turkey). If Akyol eventually decides to try his luck in the NBA he has some intriguing potential, but for now this is just another minor move by a team with a lot of salary flexibility.
What does it give the Los Angeles Clippers?
This trade does one thing for the Clips: keeps them from having to pay Cunningham's modest salary cap hit. With that in mind this isn't a bad short-term move for a team that wasn't using Cunningham much at all. At age 32, Lishchuk looks unlikely to ever play in the NBA, and was likely included simply to suffice the NBA requirement that the assets in trades match up.
Fantasy Impact
There's little fantasy impact as a result of this trade, although in the deepest of keeper leagues Akyol may now have a little more appeal (since he would probably see a lot more playing time with the Sixers than with the Clippers--of course, only if he decides to play in the NBA sometime down the road).
