NETS MOVE KIRILENKO, GUTIERREZ FOR DAVIES Thursday, December 11, 2014
The Brooklyn Nets acquired center/forward Brandon Davies from the Philadelphia 76ers for combo guard Jorge Gutierrez, combo forward Andrei Kirilenko, a second-round draft pick in 2020, the right to swap second-round draft picks in 2018, and two trade exceptions.
What does it give the Brooklyn Nets?
Is this the start of an overhaul for Brooklyn's roster? Overall, the biggest positive for the Nets here is they save $11-12 million in salary and luxury tax. Meanwhile, Brooklyn will give young scoring big man Davies a look to see if he can stick with the team for the long haul. With aging vets such as Garnett still in the fold, Davies may be seen as a younger option--eventually. This move also allowed the Nets to sign point guard Morris to fill the roster spot that opened up.
What does it give the Philadelphia 76ers?
This deal is more of the same for the 76ers, who continue to clearly play for tomorrow (not today). Energetic, speedy Gutierrez might help the Sixers' backcourt a little, but this deal seems more about adding draft picks and increasing control of Round 2 in the '18 draft (giving the Sixers more stashable contracts and more trade options). Philadelphia also gets the trade exceptions, worth over $4 million (allowing them to trade for players of that salary value without moving salary the other way). The Sixers could really use Kirilenko, but his future with the team is cloudy at best--as he's currently away dealing with a personal issue, and is expected to be waived.
Fantasy Impact
The injury-plagued Nets can use Davies' post scoring right away, but obviously he'll need to work his way into the rotation first. Gutierrez has the tools to be an NBA regular but is still mostly unproven, so he's no more than a deep sleeper at this point. Kirilenko's value may get a boost later this season if / when he returns (assuming he gets waived and then signed by a contender).
