HEAT NABS NAPIER BY MOVING UP Thursday, June 26, 2014
The Miami Heat acquired the draft rights to point guard Shabazz Napier from the Charlotte Hornets for the draft rights to shooting guard P.J. Hairston, plus a second-round draft pick in 2014 (no. 55 overall, then traded to Oklahoma City for cash), and a second-round draft pick in 2019, and cash.
What does it give the Miami Heat?
This deal is pretty straight-forward for Miami: they needed to move up to draft Napier, whom superstar LeBron James is a big fan of. Factoring in Miami's need at point guard (especially after Chalmers struggles in the playoffs), this all added up to the Heat selecting the NBA-ready Napier. It cost them two second-rounders to move up, but this seems mostly about enticing free agent James back to Miami (so should be worth it).
What does it give the Charlotte Hornets?
The Hornets really capitalize here on Miami's need to move up, and get a player they wanted in Hairston, plus a 2019 second-round pick in the future and cash. The 2014 second-rounder they received (No. 55 overall) was used to draft guard Semaj Christon, whom Charlotte then traded to Oklahoma City for yet more cash. Since Hairston is clearly the player they wanted, getting a future pick and cash for helping Miami isn't a bad deal here for the Hornets.
Fantasy Impact
Expect Napier to be a starter for the Heat in 2014-15, which should make him at least somewhat fantasy-worthy (although how fantasy-worthy depends on which stars return to and / or sign on with Miami). Generally, consider him a later-round fantasy option. Hairston is unlikely to be as useful in fantasy next season, as he'll be stuck behind Henderson and others in Charlotte. That said, he's a good scorer so keep Hairston on the radar.
