DRUMMOND DEALT TO CLEVELAND! Thursday, February 6, 2020
The Cleveland Cavaliers acquired center Andre Drummond from the Detroit Pistons for center/forward John Henson, guard Brandon Knight and a conditional second-round draft pick in 2023.
What does it give the Cleveland Cavaliers?
WOW! Drummond is a huge piece acquired by the young Cavaliers (provided they can convince him to stick around beyond 2019-20). It is a solid gamble regardless of what Drummond's summer decision may be, as Cleveland did not surrender a ton in order to get his rights. With an exciting young backcourt (Collin Sexton and Darius Garland) in tow, the Cavaliers might have enough cache to convince Drummond to stay. This move is a bit of a shocker.
What does it give the Detroit Pistons?
The Pistons were said to be leaning towards keeping Drummond past the trade deadline (with the hope of convincing him to re-sign with them), but clearly that did not happen. So, they turn the page by landing Henson (a fragile but talented big man with untapped upside), veteran guard Knight (originally drafted by Detroit in 2011, he spent his first two NBA campaigns with the Pistons) and a second-round pick. Did Detroit get enough in return?
Fantasy Impact
Drummond's fantasy stock should remain solid during his time in Cleveland (no matter how long or short that may be). Henson could see increased minutes in Detroit, though he should not be picked up immediately. Take a wait-and-see approach with Henson. The biggest winner after this deal is clearly Christian Wood, who will likely become Detroit's starting center. Knight's value remains negligible.
