SPURS SEAL DEAL FOR DeMARRE CARROLL Saturday, July 6, 2019
In a three-team trade, The San Antonio Spurs acquired forward DeMarre Carroll from the Brooklyn Nets; the Washington Wizards acquired forward Davis Bertans from San Antonio, and the Nets acquired guard/forward Nemanja Dangubic from San Antonio and forward Aaron White from Washington.
What does it give the San Antonio Spurs?
Veteran Carroll, who turns 33 later this month, is a solid forward who now joins his eighth NBA team since being drafted 27th overall in 2009. He will likely back up both forward positions in San Antonio and provide leadership. He is a Gregg Popovich player, without question.
What does it give the Washington Wizards?
The Wizards get an intriguing "stretch 4" in Bertans, a 26-year-old Latvian with nice range. He is more of a shooter than rebounder or shot-blocker, so expect Bertans to come off the bench in Washington (as was the case with the Spurs). He has untapped upside.
What does it give the Brooklyn Nets?
For the Nets, dumping Carroll's contract was vital to the team's off-season plans (which included adding superstars Kyrie Irving and Kevin Durant). Therefore, they received very little in return. Dangubic and White are both long shots to sign with Brooklyn.
Fantasy Impact
Carroll's impact will likely be felt a lot more on the Spurs than in any fantasy league. There is little reason to draft him in most league formats. As for Bertans, he has some intriguing shooting skills but needs to earn a lot more playing time in Washington than was the case in San Antonio to become much more fantasy-relevant. It could happen, so drafting Bertans as a last-round pick may have its merits.
