JAZZ MAKE A MOVE FOR MIKE CONLEY Saturday, July 6, 2019
The Utah Jazz acquired guard Mike Conley from the Memphis Grizzlies for forward Jae Crowder, guard Grayson Allen, a protected first-round draft pick in 2020, forward Darius Bazley and forward/guard Kyle Korver.
What does it give the Utah Jazz?
In Conley, the Jazz land arguably the best point guard available via trade this summer. He will replace veteran Ricky Rubio (who is expected to leave via free agency) and provide far better scoring chops from the 1 position. Conley will now team with Donovan Mitchell in Utah to form one of the best backcourts in the National Basketball Association. The Jazz paid a steep price to land him (5 assets) but Conley--who turns 32 in October--might be worth it for a Utah squad looking to make noise in the Western Conference next season.
What does it give the Memphis Grizzlies?
The Grizzlies are preparing for the arrival of Ja Morant, the No. 2 overall selection in the 2019 NBA Draft and the best point guard available, by shipping Conley out. In Crowder, the Grizz get a solid, no-frills forward who can play either the 3 or the 4 position. Allen is a sharpshooter but he remains largely an unknown quantity at this point. Veteran Korver may be waived and will be a role player if he plays for Memphis in 2019-20. So, the keys to this deal are the first-rounders. The future first will be a protected 2020 first-round pick.
Fantasy Impact
Conley could have a nice spike in fantasy value with the move from Memphis to Utah. He now becomes the No. 2 scoring option (behind Mitchell) on his new team. Crowder's stock should remain the same (he is a more valuable basketball player in reality than in fantasy leagues), while Allen has some upside as a three-point shooter. Korver is likely done. The biggest winner of this trade is Morant, who will become the new franchise point guard in Memphis once he is selected second overall.
