Trade Details
MARKIEFF MORRIS MOVES TO NEW ORLEANS Wednesday, February 6, 2019
The New Orleans Pelicans acquired forward/center Markieff Morris and a second-round draft pick in 2023 from the Washington Wizards for forward/guard Wesley Johnson.
What does it give the New Orleans Pelicans?
The Pelicans are in the middle of revamping their frontcourt (with the expected trades of both Anthony Davis and Nikola Mirotic), so Morris may add some value to the franchise when he gets healthy (he is currently out indefinitely with neck injury). The 29-year-old veteran is a nice insurance policy for New Orleans, while adding a second rounder in this deal also helps the team down the line.
What does it give the Washington Wizards?
Trading Morris to New Orleans is basically a salary dump by Washington, as Johnson is not as expensive as Morris (although he is also not as good of an NBA player as Morris). The Wizards have to start planning for life without star point guard John Wall for the next calendar year (at least), so this move is part of that plan. Johnson may not be long for Washington (he may be waived).
Fantasy Impact
While Morris is talented when focused, his current injury, his pending free agency and the Pelicans' big-man depth all work against him right now. He should only be added in very deep leagues that allow for extra roster spots for currently injured players. As for Johnson, he can be safely avoided in all leagues at this time.
