DAKARI JOHNSON MOVED TO THE MAGIC Friday, July 20, 2018
The Orlando Magic acquired power forward / center Dakari Johnson from the Oklahoma City Thunder for shooting guard Rodney Purvis.
What does it give the Orlando Magic?
Johnson is a bruising, energetic post player who rebounds well and can score on the block. That makes him a solid depth addition for an Orlando team that's stocking up on big men. Look for Johnson to back up at both center and power forward, and for him to push fellow youngsters Jonathan Isaac and Mo Bamba for minutes. Several reports say the Magic also receives some cash from the Thunder as part of this deal.
What does it give the Oklahoma City Thunder?
The Thunder has made some major (and expensive) moves this off-season, so this is about saving money. Johnson's contract (roughly $1.4 million for 2018-19) was guaranteed, while Purvis' (for a nearly identical amount) is not. Ergo, OKC frees up some cash to save on luxury tax. It will be surprising if the Thunder doesn't waive Purvis, who would played a fringe / bench role if he somehow sticks around.
Fantasy Impact
There is no fantasy value here, as neither Johnson nor Purvis will likely generate enough playing time in 2018-19 to garner interest in most league formats.
