BIYOMBO, MOZGOV, GRANT, STONE SWAPPED IN 3-TEAM TRADE Sunday, July 8, 2018
In a three-team trade, the Charlotte Hornets acquired center Bismack Biyombo, a second-round draft pick in 2019 and a second-round draft pick in 2020 from the Orlando Magic; the Chicago Bulls acquired guard Julyan Stone from Charlotte, and the Magic acquired guard Jerian Grant from Chicago and center Timofey Mozgov from Charlotte.
What does it give the Charlotte Hornets?
Biyombo can be a dominant defensive center for stretches, so he essentially replaces last season's starting pivot Dwight Howard (who was traded earlier this summer for Mozgov). Biyombo is over six years younger than Howard, so this is a move that should help the Hornets' young core play with more pace and energy.
What does it give the Chicago Bulls?
In this deal the Bulls essentially swap out one low-salaried guard (Grant) for another low-salaried guard (Stone), while helping the Hornets and Magic move a pair of much bigger contracts (those of Biyombo and Mozgov).
What does it give the Orlando Magic?
The Magic have three potential future all-stars in the frontcourt (Aaron Gordon, Mo Bamba and Jonathan Isaac) so Mozgov obviously isn't a building block. That said, he can provide solid veteran minutes to take some pressure off the youngsters, and this deal also brings Grant (who showed he can start in the NBA fairly capably, if needed).
Fantasy Impact
Chicago's jettisoning of Grant means the starting point guard gig probably now belongs entirely to Kris Dunn, who showed great signs last season of busting out. For Charlotte's players, the return of Biyombo likely means talented fellow centers Cody Zeller and Frank Kaminsky will yet again be coming off the bench (and it equally hurts the fantasy prospects of super sleeper Willy Hernangomez). Expect Biyombo to possibly put up more consistent numbers of rebounds and blocks (but don't expect much offense). With Orlando, Grant has a chance at a role similar this season to the one he had with the Bulls last season (that is, sharing point guard duties with another player, in this case D.J. Augustin). Don't expect either Orlando point guard to put up significant fantasy numbers.
