SUNS ADD SWEET-SHOOTING TROY DANIELS FROM GRIZZLIES Friday, September 22, 2017
The Phoenix Suns acquired shooting guard Troy Daniels and a 2nd-round draft pick in 2018 from the Memphis Grizzlies for a conditional 2nd-round draft pick in 2018.
What does it give the Phoenix Suns?
In Daniels, the Suns get a 3-point shooting specialist who adds another veteran presence to a mostly young clubhouse. His ability to stretch the floor and bring some experience to the team's second unit should help Phoenix take the next step in its development this season.
What does it give the Memphis Grizzlies?
The key here for the Grizzlies is moving Daniels' contract. Memphis is overloaded with wing players and guaranteed contracts, so sending Daniels to Phoenix provides some much-needed roster flexibility and a bit of financial breathing room. The second-round pick received here by Memphis is top-55 protected, so it's not much of an asset.
Fantasy Impact
If he can be more consistent with his shooting, Daniels has a chance to push for backup minutes behind young star Devin Booker at shooting guard for Phoenix. His arrival might eat into the playing time of rookie wing Josh Jackson, who was a risky fantasy proposition even before this deal. On the Memphis side of the swap, little changes; Tyreke Evans, Mario Chalmers, Wade Baldwin, and Wayne Selden look locked into regular rotation minutes at shooting guard (as does Ben McLemore, once he gets healthy).
